Buying a thermal camera in Canada: the question nobody asks the vendor

The offshore listing is cheaper, and the honest answer to why involves one question your security vendor should not be answering for you.

Every so often a client sends us a link. A thermal camera, on an offshore marketplace, at a price that is not close to the Canadian quote. The message underneath is always the same: am I being had?

It is a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a defensive one. Here is the straight answer, in two parts — because this question actually has two, and most vendors blur them together in a way that flatters themselves.

The first part is commercial, and we can answer it fully.

The second part is regulatory, and we will not answer it, because we cannot source it and neither can anyone else who is trying to sell you a camera.

Why the two prices are different

Start with the thing that is easy to get wrong. A large gap between an offshore listing and a domestic quote is not proof that the domestic seller is gouging, and it is not proof that the offshore seller is a fraud. It usually means the two prices are for different things, and the difference is invisible in the listing photo.

A Canadian distributor price generally carries a chain of things behind it: an authorized supply route from the manufacturer, a warranty the manufacturer will actually honour in this country, a return path when a unit fails, firmware you can keep getting, and somebody who answers the phone when the camera does not do what the datasheet said. An offshore marketplace price frequently carries none of that, and it does not have to disclose which ones it is missing.

There is also a category of listing where the unit itself is genuine but the route is not — grey-market stock diverted from a region it was allocated to, sold outside the manufacturer's authorized channel. The hardware in the box can be exactly what it claims to be. The support relationship that normally comes attached to that hardware is the part that got left behind.

None of this makes offshore purchasing illegitimate. It makes it a different transaction, and the price difference is largely the measure of what you are not buying.

What actually goes wrong, and when

The failure mode is rarely at unboxing. A grey-market camera that arrives dead is annoying but cheap to learn from — you are out one unit and a few weeks.

The expensive version happens later.

Warranty and RMA. A camera fails in year two. On an authorized Canadian purchase, the replacement path runs through your distributor, domestically, and the site is back up in days. On a grey-market unit, you may find the manufacturer declines the claim because the serial was never allocated to this region, or the claim is valid but the return path runs back to the seller you bought from — which means shipping a camera offshore, at your cost, and waiting. On a single unit that is a bad afternoon. On a perimeter with several thermal cameras from the same shipment, it is a hole in your coverage for as long as the process takes.

Firmware and support continuity. Cameras are software now. Security fixes, analytics improvements, and compatibility with your recorder all arrive as firmware, and access to it is often tied to a registered, authorized product. A camera cut off from that stream does not stop working the day it is cut off. It slowly stops being current, which is a much harder problem to notice and a much worse one to inherit.

Integration support. This is the one buyers systematically underestimate. Thermal is almost never a standalone purchase — it earns its place as the detection layer that triggers something else, which means it has to talk to your recorder, your analytics, and whatever handles the alert at three in the morning. When that handshake does not work, the difference between a distributor relationship and a marketplace order is the difference between a support ticket and a forum search. We have spent more unbilled hours on the second than on any other cause.

A supply chain someone stands behind. For a commercial site — and especially one with any contractual or insurance obligation attached to its monitoring — being able to say where equipment came from, who is responsible for it, and who is obliged to fix it is not paperwork. It is the thing that makes the system defensible when someone asks about it later.

What thermal specifically makes worse

There is a reason this question lands on thermal more than on ordinary cameras, and it is worth naming.

Thermal is a specifying purchase. Axis, describing its own product category, puts the core limit plainly: "Unlike conventional cameras, this technology only allows for detection." That is the whole basis of the design — thermal tells you something is there, and an optical camera tells you who. We wrote about that division of labour separately in thermal is not night vision, and it matters here for a practical reason.

Because thermal only detects, its value depends almost entirely on whether the detection is right — the field of view, the mounting geometry, the analytics behind it, and the tuning that keeps it from alerting on a warm exhaust vent every evening. Those are all decisions made before the box is opened, and they are exactly the decisions a distributor or authorized dealer helps you make. A specification sheet on a marketplace listing will tell you a lens angle. It will not tell you whether that lens angle covers your fence line from the only mounting point your building actually has.

You can get that wrong with any camera. With thermal you can get it wrong expensively, because the wrong thermal camera is not a slightly worse picture — it is a detection layer that does not detect where you needed it to.

The same applies to whether thermal is the right instrument at all. That is the subject of where thermal early fire detection is a waste, and it is a question worth settling before the price comparison, not after.

So: buy through a Canadian distributor or authorized dealer

That is our actual recommendation, and the reasons above are the whole of it. They are practical, not legal. Warranty that works without a shipping label to another continent. Firmware you keep getting. Somebody accountable for the box. Help with the part that decides whether the system works — the design, not the purchase.

If the price gap still bothers you, the useful move is not to buy offshore. It is to take the offshore listing to your Canadian supplier and ask them to account for the difference, item by item. A good one can. A supplier who responds to that question with vagueness has told you something too.

The part we will not answer

Now the second question, the one embedded in "can I just import one myself."

Thermal imaging equipment can fall within import and export control regimes. Those regimes are technical, they turn on specific characteristics of the specific device, and they are jurisdiction-specific. That is the honest extent of what we will tell you, and we are being deliberate about stopping there.

We will not tell you which regime, or what the thresholds are, or whether the particular camera in your browser tab is caught by any of them. Not because it is secret — because we have not read the governing instrument, and we are not going to summarize a control list we have not opened. Getting that wrong is not a customer-service error. It is the kind of error that lands on the importer of record, which is you.

You will notice we have not linked you to a government page either. Linking a department's home page would create the impression that we had read the list behind it and were pointing you at our source. We have not, and it would not be.

Those questions belong to two places:

  • A licensed customs broker, who does this professionally, carries responsibility for the advice, and will ask you for the specification sheet rather than guessing from a product name.
  • The relevant federal authority, which is the only body whose answer about its own regime is authoritative.

Neither of those is your security vendor. We route this question; we do not answer it. If you ask us, what you will get is the name of a broker and a suggestion to have the manufacturer's full specification in hand when you call.

And this is the part actually worth carrying away: a vendor who answers that question casually is guessing with your risk. They are not the importer. They do not sign the declaration. If the confident answer turns out to be wrong, the consequence attaches to your company, not to the salesperson who reassured you over the phone. Confidence is free to give away when someone else is holding the exposure.

There is a version of this article that would have been much more satisfying to read — one with a clause number in it, a threshold, a clean yes-or-no. We could have written it. It would have looked authoritative and it would have been fabricated, and you would have had no way to tell from the page which one you were reading.

The short version

The Canadian price is usually higher because it includes things the offshore price does not: a warranty that works here, a return path that does not cross an ocean, firmware continuity, and somebody who is accountable when the design has to change. On a commercial site, and particularly on thermal, those are worth more than the gap.

If you are still considering importing directly, that is a legitimate thing to consider — and the questions it raises are real, technical, and not ours. Ask a customs broker. Ask the federal authority. Then come back and let us design the system, which is the part we can actually stand behind.
